Ask an Expert - Forum > Best kind of parchment(paper)

I am looking for parchment, preferably real and was wondering what kind of things I need to consider like what kind of weight. I use a ink and quill to write calligraphy and want the parchment to feel thicker than regular printing paper but not that it is almost cardboard.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Lars,

Legion paper does not carry traditional parchment paper; however, we carry a few papers suitable for calligraphy using ink and quill. There are a few things to consider when choosing a paper for ink and quill; surface texture, paper sizing and thickness.

Surface Texture: For calligraphy, artists require a smooth to lightly texture sheet. A smoother sheet allows for the quill to glide along the paper and create crisp lines.

Paper Sizing: To avoid bleeding or fraying, the paper must be manufactured with external paper sizing. Hot Press watercolor papers and archival drawing papers are the best options.

Thickness: It is important to use a sheet that is 250gsm or thicker to ensure that the ink will not bleed through the back side of the paper.

We recommend Stonehenge or Stonehenge Aqua for ink and quill calligraphy. Stonehenge is a high performing, 100% cotton drawing paper that offers a slight vellum texture, light surface sizing and comes in weights of 250gsm and 320gsm.

Stonehenge Aqua is technically a watercolor sheet; however, the smooth Hot Press surface is ideal and this paper is both internally and externally sized which will prevent fraying and bleed through. Lastly, Stonehenge Aqua Hot Press comes in weights of 300gsm and 550gsm.
