Hi, I'm Ariana and I'm an art student. Ever since I was a kid I've always loved doing art of any kind. This semester in my drawing class we're doing a graphite drawing. My question is what would the best type of paper be if I prefer somewhat smooth paper for this drawing?

Hi Ariana,

The best papers for graphite require some tooth to let the graphite to settle into the paper which allows you to add and remove layers. The most popular graphite papers have a subtle to medium vellum texture and a heavier weight.

Although you can use many different papers for graphite drawing, I have listed three of our most popular and highest performing graphite papers below.

1. Stonehenge is a 100% cotton machine made sheet that offers a subtle vellum texture. This is one of the most durable papers available and comes in two weights; 250gsm and 320gsm as well as eight different colors.

2. Coventry Rag Vellum is a 100% cotton machine made sheet that has a more pronounced vellum surface. This paper is available in weights of 235gsm, 290gsm and 320gsm.

3. Legion Drawing & Framing / Rising Barrier is also a 100% cotton machine made sheet that has a slightly smoother texture than Stonehenge. This paper is ideal for artists who like to work on a softer surface.
