Ask an Expert - Forum > Problem with Arches Platine paper

I have been using Arches Platine paper for photography work with Bromoil printing for many years and it has always been my favorite paper to use. I recently purchased a large roll from B&H Photo in New York and have had nothing but problems with it. I hand coat the paper with liquid photo emulsion from FOMA to make my bromoil prints from. However, it seems that the emulsion is having major problems with the emulsion is loosing its adhesion to the paper. When I soak the coated paper in water to make the bromoil print, it shows hundreds of tiny pinholes and the emulsion starts to raise up off the paper in a bunch of tiny spots. When I soak a piece of the paper that hasn't been coated, it doesn't show this problem. This is affecting the print when I apply the lithographers ink to the paper when making the bromoil prints.

The only thing I can think of is that either (1) I have a bad batch of paper, or (2) something has changed in your paper making process (perhaps the sizing formula/process you are now using has changed) and is no longer compatible with the FOMA liquid photo emulsion. I have never experienced this happening before with Arches Platine paper, but this is the first large roll I have used (I normally purchase cut sheets). I now have a large roll of arches paper that I don't think will work anymore with this process.
