Ask an Expert - Forum > Non-cotton paper

Hi, What is Legions’ recommendation on using non-cotton paper for creating durable/archival work on paper? Are there any specs to look for, is there new information on durability of non-cotton paper, or new types of non-cotton paper that are more durable? Non-cotton meaning pulp and alpha-cellulose, but could include synthetic, plastics, what have you.

I ask because I sometimes get good results with non-cotton papers, but always read they are not as durable.
thanks

Traditional cotton-based papers have been favored for their archival qualities, but there's been a growing interest in non-cotton alternatives. Other than the usual specs to look for when choosing an non-cotton paper (acid-free, Lignin-free), it’s also important to look at additives. Some papers may have added brighteners, fillers, or other chemicals that can affect their longevity. It's important to be aware of these and choose accordingly.

Synthetic papers, such as YUPO, have also gained traction in art applications due to their resistance to environmental factors and smooth, non-porous surface. Due to its synthetic properties, it's use may be limited to certain applications. For example, one cannot use YUPO in an inkjet printer.

If longevity and archival quality are paramount, traditional cotton rag papers still remain the gold standard for most archival applications due to the strength of its fibers and being naturally lignin-free. However, high-quality alpha-cellulose papers can offer a reasonable compromise with reduced cost.

Also remember that the storage conditions (like exposure to light, humidity, pollutants) play as significant a role in the longevity of the artwork as the materials used to create the art. Proper framing, matting (using Rising Museum Board, for example), utilizing UV-protective glass, and storing artwork in controlled environments can help preserve them, regardless of the type of paper used.

Thanks, difficult to tell if a non-cotton art paper is free of additives and lignin. Many will have "acid free" on the packaging, but not mention lignin, fillers, brighteners, etc.

All the non-cotton art papers we supply are lignin-free. And you're correct in that it's often difficult to determine those papers with OBAs. But always feel free to reach out to us with any questions about our papers and we'll get you the answers.
