Ask an Expert - Forum > Is Stonehenge the right paper for me?

I am deep in paper research and I hope you can help me. I had been making charcoal drawings on Fabriano Rosaspina. The softness of the surface was perfect for that work, but it's too soft for erasing. I'm struggling to find a paper that has a similar surface (all hot press papers I've tried are too smooth, all cold press too textured) but is more durable, able to take erasing, masking tape removal and some watercolor. Regular Stonehenge is the winner at the moment, though it seems to be mainly available in 250 gsm which isn't heavy enough. I see 320 gsm is available in the large sheets and 140yd rolls but am really looking for a paper I can commit to for a large body of upcoming work and would love to find something I can get in a 22" x 30" sheet too.

So! I'm looking for a 300gsm (or so) white paper
Available in 22" x 30" sheets (if it also comes in larger sheets and rolls that's great:) )
Durable enough to accept erasing and some watercolor media
*most important* a smoothish surface but softer than a hot press, able to hold charcoal and build it up to a good black but no cold press texture. Stonehenge surface is pretty good.

Can you suggest any other papers for me to try?

We suggest you try Coventry Rag (vellum). We have this in a 290g as 22x30, but also heavier weights in larger sheets.

Also, take a look at Rives BFK in 280g. It's also offered in a heavier weight 300g roll

Somerset Velvet is a medium textured paper in 300g that is offered in a 22x30 sheet

For something a bit heavier at 362g you might like the Drawing Bristol
