Ask an Expert - Forum > Best paper for graphite pencil

Hello, I am an art student. Two of my teachers have different preferences when it comes to paper for drawing. One has a preference for Stonehenge and the other prefers BFK Rives. I have also used Lenox 100 paper. In the past few semesters I have mainly used charcoal for my pieces but for my final life drawing piece this semester I would like to use graphite pencils. I was wondering what paper would likely work best with graphite pencils out of or on par with these options when it comes to quality. I would prefer a paper that allows for me to erase fairly effectively. Thank you.

Hello Dorothy,

To be honest, the three papers you mention (Rives, Stonehenge and Lenox) are considered to be some of the best papers for drawing (and printmaking). The are many 100% cotton papers suitable for graphite that differ in both color and texture, but if you like the surface and feel of those three papers then they'll serve you well.

If you're looking for a bit more tooth you might want to consider Somerset Velvet. Another popular family of papers for graphite are the smooth hotpress watercolor papers. We'd suggest trying the Stonehenge Aqua Hotpress 140lb.

Here are links to the papers mentioned above:
